Gift

<Your friend, correspondence and collaboration> at Gallery Factory in Seoul was the first opportunity to give form to all the correspondence and collaboration that support of my artistic, curatorial and educational practice.

At the core of the exhibition were five workshops designed for uncommon social situations, new conversation and collaboration. Starting with Crowdpilot blind date with Lauren McCarthy, Uncertainty school with Fabcoop, In Search of Personalized Time with E Roon Kang and Spam Lunch, Spam Mail with David Horvitz. The exhibition also presented 30+ drawings and artifacts by the participating artists like Christine Sun Kim, David Horvitz and myself. I created new works for the exhibition ‘Furniture for all occasions’ which were built by Ikkyun Shin and various ink drawings on paper. We decided to extend the exhibition until the end of March.

The exhibition <Your friend, correspondence and collaboration> was made without a fixed budget. There were real costs involved with shipping, producing, renting, cooking, facilitating, travel that went under my own expenses. However, most importantly, all of the works in the exhibition was realized as a gift from the participating artists and the gallery factory.

I am starting a small fundraising campaign to produce a limited edition artist book that will complete the project and also open up ways in which the project can live beyond my direct involvement. From the project’s inception and planning, I made a decision to not depend on grant or spend time for crowd funding, instead imagine ways of other ways gifting and collecting that will support the artists and the project.

Condtions will be appllied to all gifts

  1. Gifting to the project without an explicit expectation of future rewards. This is an opportunity to contribute to the project’s continued existence.

  2. Gifting the art works to yourself and friends. I have a catalogue of available works that are priced moderately specially for the fundraising campaign. This is similar to the traditional modes of sales and collection, except all the works will come in gift package and agreement with the artists about the restrictions of resale.

  3. Sharing the art work as a cooperative collection. All of the works are available to be collected by a group of people, which comes with an agreement with the artists about the nature of collection and the process in which the work’s ownership can be passed on in the future.

The immediate goal is to raise $3000 to produce limited edition artist book about the workshops that happened during the exhibition. The artist book will be a pair of small pamphlets, each containing parts of the conversation that happened in the workshop. One part of the book will be mailed to you and the other part to your friend. Your conversation with them will complete the book. The fund will also realize special publication of Sharing Faces by Kyle McDonald which has not been created yet.

It should go with clear mention that exhibition and performance between February and March of 2015 in Seoul was realized primarily because of the opportunity that the Gallery Factory has gifted. Gift, in this case, was an invitation for presenting work and to stage collaboration.

갤러리 팩토리에서 3월 29일까지 연장되는 <당신의 친구, 대화와 협업> 전시는 내 창작, 기획, 교육 활동의 바탕이 되는 대화와 협업에 형태를 준 첫 기회였다.

전시의 핵심에는 평범하지 않은 사회적 상황을 유도하는 다섯 번의 워크숍이 있었다. 로렌 메카시와 함께 한 크라우드 파일럿 소개팅, 청개구리 제작소와 함께 한 불확실한 학교, 강이룬과 함께 한 맞춤형 시간을 찾아서, 데이비드 호르비츠와 함께 한 스팸 런치, 스팸 메일. 또한 크리스틴 선 킴과 같은 참여 작가와 내가 그린 30개 이상의 그림을 전시했다. 전시와 워크숍을 위해 특별히 신익균이 제작한 가구는 “모든 상황을 위한 가구”의 디자인을 바탕으로 하고 있다.

<당신의 친구, 대화와 협업>은 정해진 예산 없이 진행했다. 전시를 위한 실질적인 비용 지출: 작품 운송, 장비 대여, 음식과 교통비는 내가 부담했다. 하지만 가장 중요하고 많은 부분을 차지한 작품 제작과 전시 진행은 갤러리 팩토리의 지원이 있어서 가능했고, 참여 작가들의 자발적인 참여가 있었다.

이번 전시를 마무리할 아티스트 북을 만들기 위한 작은 펀드레이징 캠페인을 시작한다. 그 책은 내가 직접 프로젝트에 관여하지 않아도 우리의 대화가 이어질수 있도록 디자인하고 있다. 프로젝트의 시작부터 나는 기금 신청이나 크라우드 펀딩은 하지 않기로 생각했다. 그 대신 작가와 작품 제작을 직접 도울 수 있는 선물과 콜랙션의 방법을 생각해보고자 했다.

선물 할 수 있는 방법과 조건.

  1. 선물. 아무런 기대 없이 프로젝트에 기부한다. 조건없는 기부를 통해서 이런 프로젝트가 이어질 수 있도록 돕는다.
  2. 자신 혹은 친구에게 프로젝트에서 소개한 작품을 선물한다. 이번 펀드레이징 캠페인을 위해 특별히 가격을 낮춰 측정한 작품들의 문서가 있다. 이 방법은 전통적인 작품 판매와 비슷하지만 모든 작품은 선물로 포장되며 재판매를 제약하는 조건에 동의해야 한다.
  3. 작품을 친구 혹은 다른 사람과 공동 콜랙팅. 모든 작품은 한사람 이상과 공유할 수 있고, 작가는 그들의 동의를 인정하는 증명서를 작성한다. 그리고 미래에 작품의 소유권을 전달할 수 있는 유일한 방법은 ‘선물’이다.

전시 기간 동안 모으고자 하는 액수는 300만원이다. 그 돈은 아티스트 북을 제작하는 실비용이다. 한 쌍의 작은 아티스트 북은 전시 기간에 진행된 대화와 협업에 대한 내용이다. 하나는 책의 구매자, 그리고 다른 하나는 구매자가 지정한 친구에게 보내질 것이다. 그들의 대화로 책은 완성된다. 그리고 모금한 돈으로 아직 구현하지 못한 카일 맥도날드의 우리는 같은 표정을 하고 있다의 아티스트 북도 제작하려고 한다.

이번 2~3월의 전시는 갤러리 팩토리의 후원이 없었다면 진행할수 없었다. 이 경우에 전시 기획의 초대도 프로젝트를 위한 하나의 선물이었다. 프로젝트를 통해 만든 여러 작품과 이야기들을 다른 사람들도 누군가에게 선물할수 있는 기회를 만들고자 한다.
