Dear friends

How are you doing? Hope all is well.

I’d like to invite you to participate in an exhibition I’m organizing called “Your friend.”

This is going to be my fourth major exhibition, in the context of previous solo exhibitions like “My friends, there is no friend” at Spanien 19c, Aarhus, Denmark (2011) and “Speakers Corners” at Eyebeam, NY (2012). The venue is Gallery Factory located in the center of Seoul. It’s a beautiful space that hosts interesting shows. Link! The gallery director Bora Hong has been my supporter and a friend for more than ten years now. As matter of fact, we’ve been talking about doing something for about two years and it will materialize very soon. I’m really excited to show stuff there and work with her.

The gallery usually alternate between solo shows and curated group shows, while the team spends significant amount of time organizing public art commissions and international exchange. I was also aware of the gallery changing direction toward something new: mixing production and social events alongside exhibition. I believe that’s why Bora wants me to do things this February as they transition into new mode.

After considering various ways of showing my work or organizing performance and workshops there, I realized the most interesting aspects of my work (for me) are the correspondence with friends. The exchange take form of writing and drawings, and collaborations including curation and technical support and all the other silliness that are on the borderline of jokes and pranks. So, my task was to make them more accessible to others.

Curating a show in a traditional sense (present our work as finished pieces) but it didn’t seem that fun or best use of the opportunity. So this is going to be neither a solo show or curated show, but more of activating a living archive and platform to do things together. Since you all know me well, I bet you get a sense of the uneasily definable form that I’m trying to build here. The idea of an exhibition is to show my work alongside correspondence and process of collaboration with friends. I’ll also organize few public events that participants can join in. I’d like to take this chance to further develop the ideas we shared and artifacts from our exchange: text, image, document from performance, video and photo, or possibly new piece.

I’m interested in the social and personal space of artistic production: virtual (or imaginary) as well as physical (or real) ‘friendship’ that we participate in. The exhibition is a proposition for a way of making and experiencing art. For example, when art tries to be socially engaged, community driven, communicative, challenging the medium and the technique, is it possible to keep the artistic integrity among all the conflicting values? Before I tap into the large discussion or plans, I’d like to think about the friends I make work with, the friends I make work for. I think ‘friend’ is a word that’s charged with political and cultural depth that’s worthy of looking closely at this point in time. In this participatory ‘Sharing economy’, everything tells they are our friends, from social media to customer service and user experience. But what is really your friend? and how can art become tools for intimacy and friendship? I’m optimistic that the open network of true friends based on unspoken promise and friendships will be the force behind realizing the change we want to see in this world.

I hope the exhibition (which will be held for a month or longer in Seoul as well as online starting 2.12) is an inviting environment for viewers to become friends, discover the friends they were unaware of, and also become friends with me and other artists. I will be there for two weeks, hosting various events and performances.

Let me know what you think and if you want to participate. If you can, I might ask you to send me few objects or files, and follow up with the next steps. It’s fine if you are busy and can’t be part of this now. We can find another opportunity. I’m still figuring out how exactly I will execute the exhibition, but I’d like to ask if you are cool with this idea first. Feel free to email me off the thread, or reply all. I realize some of you don’t know each other yet. Maybe another that’s another reason to participate?

Your friend
